Using ecoforestry techniques, community workers harvest individual trees using tools they can carry into the forest, causing minimal damage. A portable sawmill ensures trees can be milled where they fall and the wood is carried out through bush tracks, requiring no new roads. The money made from just one plantation tree can send a child to school for a year. In the Solomon Islands alone, the ecoforestry program has trained 56 landowning groups.
