Release a turtle from a fishnet
Thousands of turtles every year get caught in fishing nets and drown. The problem is that many fishing methods don’t just catch the target fish but huge amounts of other species, including turtles, dolphins and sharks, alongside them. This gift will help us not just release turtles from nets, but stop them from getting caught in the first place by changing fishing practices.
How this gift works...
Methods used by the fishing industry are massively unselective, catching huge numbers of unwanted species alongside the target fish, which are then thrown back, dead or dying. Vast numbers of turtles, sharks and dolphins are killed each year in this way. Greenpeace is targeting fish retailers, the fishing industry and the government to press for more selective fishing methods to be used, such as pole and line, so there are no nets for turtles and other creatures to get caught in.
